So I love M*A*S*H and I have a Korean War era truck. So I thought I would put some homage on there somewhere. Tell me what you think, am I as crazy as Klinger?

I thought about painting swamp on the side of the hood, or smaller elsewhere?

Kinja'd!!!

The truck was in the 151st so I thought this heart looking thing with the lightening bolt could go somewhere in one of those spaces along the bed:

Kinja'd!!!

I saw a picture of the truck when it was with the Army Corps of Engineers and I found an official decal that they used for the doors, that I could see on the truck before they stripped the old paint off.

Here is my truck when it left their service before the previous owner got to work on it:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

So this decal can go somewhere on the bed as well. I thought I could find something to represent other jobs it had.

I like the idea of adding a nod to MASH somewhere. Maybe as an alternate location put swamp somewhere on on one of the bumpers or tailgate?

You could always drive it done up like Klinger; assuming you have the legs for it.

Get some little white rocks and some hot glue. Use ‘em to put this on the tailgate

Wait, that truck came from New Hampshire? How dare you steal it from right under my nose. [/sarcasm]

Well maybe the bumper, the tailgate will have a big tool rack on it. And I’ll have you know my legs are still talked about in at least six states!

Hawkeye: You know those rotten things I’ve said to you, all those nasty little tricks I’ve played on you?

Margaret: Yes.

Hawkeye: I’d like to get well and do them all over again .

I just watched that episode the other day, I’m going through the whole show again slowly. I’m on the hole in his boot episode. I love the 5 O’clock Charlie ones.

Well, it must have migrated to NH from somewhere without continuous salting of roads from November to May... But I couldn’t miss those plates!

I can’t wait for more updates on this truck. Meanwhile, mine is sitting in a garage, dormant for another 3 months or so. At which point I will continue to have zero time to do anything but the minimum maintenance to keep it running. Grumble grumble grumble...

We’ve been catching up on them for the last several months. So much, in fact, that I knew what scene that image you posted was from.

That show was so good.

I’d put 4077th on it like the ambulances in the movie. There must be scenes of trucks from the movie or the TV show.

Maybe drive around with a Toledo Mudhens hat on the dash.

My friend is finishing up an El Camino and then he will paint her. I found a guy who was a pro with power wagons and he will swap my gears and rebuild my steering knuckles as soon as I get the gears, which might be ready in late April or May. But I can drive it around at 45 mph.

There was actually only a couple Jeeps and a couple WWII ambulances, and I think one of them burned. They left a few things there actually. The area is now fixed up and a restored ambulance is there now. Here are some older pics of visitors. It’s Malibu Creek State Park now. But yeah I could stencil it there.

That’s cool. Do you know if the movie and the TV show were filmed in the same location?

It wasn’t but it was close, it was a few miles away at Encinal Canyon, in Malibu as well. Both locations are near the Paramount Ranch.

We watched the TV show religiously when I was a kid. We had a TV in the kitchen, and MASH came on at 5:30 in reruns when we sat down to eat. Then it was local news then John Chancellor. We never spoke at the table because my dad would always hush us so he could hear the TV. Needless to say, there is no TV in my family’s kitchen. The movie is absolutely fantastic.

They actually issued doctors those robes, the maroon/redish one Hawkeye wears. It has been my lifelong dream to find one to buy. Very rare.

That’s awesome, man. I guess I can at least drive my truck around wherever I want... mostly. I really gotta replace the ancient tires. But also the single master brake cylinder. Also the shocks.... yeah

I am planning to put disks on the front with a double brake cyl or there is also a booster kit out there. I think you have to replace the original pedals for a hanging pedal kit for that and I don’t want to ruin the pedals. My tires are from 2014 and they are soft so they should be good for a few years.

Oh man, brakes.

I don’t even want to get into that, but yeah. It sounds like you’ve done your homework.

I’ve driven a truck without a booster plenty, and really don’t mind. I’d suggest trying it that way, if that’s the simple solution for a double master, first.

With my truck, there are a million ways to go about it, but there’s really only one (okay, two) ways to get it right. I’m probably just buying a complete booster/master kit for like $300 and having a shop install it, because it involves making up a few new brake lines, and I’m just not going to do it as well as a shop.

I could say a LOT more, but I’ll stop here for now. I’d love to chat more about this, though.

Yeah I’m going to rebuilt the steering knuckles with bearings and try the drums for a bit to see how it is. Vintage Power Wagons has oversized shoes.

I really don’t mind four drums... I had that setup on my ‘72, also, for almost 10 years before I sold it. I don’t brake the trucks like I do my car... so I just don’t mind the drums. They work.

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah I will try it, I did try it out once but I haven’t been in regular traffic. Everyone with an M37 on drums says you just have to keep your distance, which will make everyone in CA so happy!

I guess it depends on your area, too. I live in a very rural area with no “traffic” so to speak. I do keep my distance, and drive extra defensively.

I had a brake line fail on my ‘72 when I was following someone fairly closely on a 50mph area, and they hit their brakes HARD, so I did too, only to find the pedal on the floor... I swerved into the left lane to avoid the imminent rear-end collision, only to find a car there coming my way. I went farther over into the grass/sand on the shoulder on the wrong side of the road, where I flattened a reflector before finding my way back on to the road, then up a hill which I used to slow me down before I pulled over safely in another grassy area. That scared the crap out of me, and I’ve since vowed to a) leave more space ALL the time, and b) upgrade my ‘61 to a dual master.

The best part of driving a truck like this is when someone in ANY modern car (made after about 1978) is tailgaiting you. Yeah, go right ahead. If you bump into my giant steel bumper, I won’t care and you’ll be exceeding your deductible.
